The tradition of realist painting in America is important to me as I seek to place my own work into the context of it's history and traditions.
Having been afforded the opportunity to study at the Pennsylvania Academy, where much of the course work put into place by Thomas Eakins continues to be taught, and to live and work, while studying with Nelson Shanks, in an environment of complete confidence in the validity of realist painting have proven to be a guide to me in my decision making process as an artist.
When painting portraits of friends and family I am engaged in an attempt to capture something of the spark that makes that person, fragile and unique, someone that the viewer feels they may already know or want to know.
The use of portraiture for commercial purposes is of no interest to me at all and I feel that, far too often, the art form is overlooked or discredited because of the sense that it is a commercial venture.
On the contrary, I feel that it is a most delicate and precious form of communication through the art of painting and I try to honor it as such.
