Founder of Seattle Atelier, Michael Lane is a mid-career artist living and working in Seattle, Washington in the United States.
He was an early participant in the representational painting revival of the 1990s at the same time that the school of art known as Perceptual Painting was being born at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
A former apprentice to Nelson Shanks at his home-studio, Chelwood in Andalusia, PA. In 1996 he worked with Shanks and Gresham Reilly to establish the Master Class program at the Pennsylvania Academy.
An in-demand instructor for many years, he opened Seattle Atelier, School for Perceptual Painting on October 9, 2014

In February 2024 the name Seattle Atelier was taken and staffed by the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle within a large building purchased and renovated specifically for their Seattle Atelier. Lane fought them and won and by October 2025 had kept the business name, Seattle Atelier.
